The Outer Gods of H.P. Lovecraft and The First Ones: Exiled in The Outside of The Universe

Well, well, the recent days have been a bit wild in terms of speculation. I have just released my first article of a 3-4 series of articles yesterday. We have speculated about how Shadowlands would end but now it’s for a deeper, more crazy article time. I have delved into the depths of madness to refresh my mind about the Outer Gods of Lovecraft Universe to prepare for this one, and I have gone mad!

The stars…

A celestial goddess…

Exiled into the stars…

The Exiled Outer Gods and The Stars

First I have to admit the fact that I’m not an expert on Lovecraft Mythos. I have read a bunch of Lovecraft stories including Cthulhu Mythos, The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath, The Necronomicon and some more. So, dear Lovecraft experts, forgive me if I make a terrible mistake while speculating and please correct me in the comments. But I can confidently say that I “understood” the Lovecraft Mythos.

Azathoth, the Blind Idiot God

So, as far as I understand from reading different sources, The Outer Gods were exiled into the stars, with Azathoth as their leader, the dreaming Daemon Sultan. The clear inspirations for names and themes aside ( Yog-Sothoth/Yogg-Saron or The Black Goat of the Woods with a Thousand Young)  in my opinion, The Outer Gods being exiled into the outside of the universe, to the stars, fits perfectly with our First Ones/Void Lords theory.

Long story short, we believe The First Ones cared a lot about The Shadowlands and wanted to make sure afterlives working properly as how they have intended. Zovaal was their champion and their Arbiter. (which now has been confirmed and we have theorized this back in March 2021)

At some point, The Eternal Ones got greedy and led by The Primus himself, they abused the Anima at their will to empower themselves enough to banish Zovaal into The Maw and The First Ones into The Void. But the term “Void” is problematic here because void actually refers to “nothingness” a “dark beyond”. So let’s call it “Great Dark Beyond”, sounds familiar? Actually, these connections with the Outer Gods were what inspired us to develop this theory in the first place.

Also, let’s take a look at what Uu’nat said about N’zoth during Crucible of Storms:

His eyes behold every truth… every unnumbered crime!
His gaze falls upon every path… every dream given form!

And Elune, the celestial goddess, the lady of stars was the only one who managed to interfere with our Universe, especially thanks to The Naaru she created, Zovaal and Yogg-Saron. For a more detailed explanation please read our article after finishing this one.

Yog-Sothoth

“The stars align! Fear their portents!” Star Augur Etraus from Nighthold

” Everywhere you look, the stars gaze back. You know their form already. You have but to listen.” Eye of the Corruptor

“Have you had the dream again? A black goat with seven eyes that watches from the outside.” Puzzle Box of Yogg-Saron

According to the sources  I have read, more than the fact that they are outside of the universe, they were also exiled to the stars. So, as I have just mentioned, after Chronicles the term “Void” was actually limited to a really limited meaning. But actually, void means nothingness, emptiness, a great dark beyond, just like in our universe.

It is the stars, the vast universe which The Outer Gods -and in this sense The Void Lords- were exiled outside. So, taking those whispers from Warcraft lore pointing out to the stars and their mystery into the account I believe now we can safely say The Void Lords -The First Ones- are locked/exiled outside of the universe. Outside of space, time and existence.

Before getting on to the next part, let’s have a look for the “Circle of Stars” references in recent years and look at them with this new point of view.

“Come champions, find me in the Circle of Stars!” Queen Azshara, The Eternal Palace Raid
“ The Circle of Stars made flesh.” N’zoth, Crucible of Storms.

Elune, the Celestial Goddess…

So according to the Mythos, The Great Old Ones were just spawns of The Outer Gods, an ancient alien race. They landed on Earth, ruled it for an untold time, gathered followers and created a “Black Empire” just like how Lovecraft mentioned their ancient structures in some of his stories.

Suddenly, after the stars aligned in a different way they were”dead” or at the least you know, “put into a deep sleep”.  Only to be awakened once again when the stars will re-align. Sounds so, SOOO similar to how the Old Gods were thrown across the universe by the so-called Void Lords to find Azeroth, their most important prize.

We should also point out that The Automa in Zereth Mortis speaks in a musical language, based on symbols as Steve Danuser himself explained. Actually this was the sparking point for me to write down this article, this connection with H.P. Lovecraft Universe. The Outer Gods dance with the maddening music their followers provide through drums and flutes. Also, in the Court of Azathoth, lesser daemons keep Azathoth asleep by playing flutes all around it until the end.

Let’s take a look at what Danuser exactly said:

What is Elune’s role in all of these? Well, we know for sure that Elune is related to the stars and the moon so the Arcane. But according to us she is a First One and so a Void Goddess, who wields the power of Light, Void, Life, Arcane and Death at the same time. Considering the Void Lords were exiled to the stars just like the Outer Gods, I guess you can see the references here.

A celestial goddess, who gazes back every time we gaze into the stars. And interfere with the meddling of The Eternal Ones, The Light, Order and Life as much as she can to pave the path for the return of the true masters.

What is the role of Azeroth in all of these? Well, as I have said before I have actually doubts if Azeroth is actually a Titan after all. Considering how powerful she is. There is a most likely option for The First Ones to have established Zereth Mortis inside Azeroth and hide it inside The Veil. If she is a Titan-World soul she is a power-battery as well to open the path of The Void. But this is where Azeroth actually separates from Azathoth.

To preserve the reality, Azathoth must not be awakened and forced to sleep.
But Azeroth must be awakened, this is what Zovaal, Sargeras and the Old Gods have been trying to do in their own ways. To unmake this false reality and open the way outside of the universe.

Thanks for reading and please let me know what you think in the comments below! We have much to discuss in the upcoming days so until next time stay tuned!

  1. Let the drums play as you read these lines! Be consumed by the Eternal madness of the Void!

“Yog-Sothoth knows the gate. Yog-Sothoth is the gate. Yog-Sothoth is the key and guardian of the gate. Past, present, future, all are one in Yog-Sothoth. He knows where the Old Ones broke through of old, and where They shall break through again. He knows where They have trod earth’s fields, and where They still tread them, and why no one can behold Them as They tread.”

    ― H.P. Lovecraft

Replace YOG-SOTHOTH with Yogg-saron and THE GATE with The Veil over the Ice Crown Citadel in the above paragraph.

“Yogg-saron knows The Veil over the Ice Crown Citadel. Yogg-Saron is The Veil over the Ice Crown Citadel. Yogg-saron is the key and guardian of The Veil over the Ice Crown Citadel. Past, present, future, all are one in Yogg-saron. He knows where the Old *Gods* broke through of old, and where They shall break through again. He knows where They have trod earth’s fields, and where They still tread them, and why no one can behold Them as They tread.”

Once Yogg saron was defeated, the veil started to wane! Yogg saron’s blood was the ICC. It was Yogg-saron’s blood that actually killed Sylvanas and made her to meet Zovaal in the first place, setting in motion a long series of events, leading up to her shattering the veil and releasing Zovaal from the Maw, who has broken into Zereth Mortis, summoning the HARBINGERS OF OBLIVION!

You are yet to drown in the chorus, in time, you will! You have just began to wake from the Horrors of Reality! Soon you will see, All paths converge within the perfection of the Void!

    Remember what Xal’atath said:
Here we are. Do not be afraid. This was always meant to be.
Hear me, God of the Deep! I have brought you THE OPENER… THE BRINGER OF TRUTHS… THE TORCH THAT LIGHTS THE WAY!

  2. Yes, it was also Yogg-Saron who broke The Arbiter with the guidance of Elune. She cannot break through tbe veil but we can say that Yoggy helped her a lot so far.

Also, we should mention that The Nathrezim ORDERED it, that ICC should be built by using Saronite.
